ICS 62: Game Technologies and Interactive Media

Spring Quarter, 2016

Homework 2 - due Wednesday, April 13, at 11:55pm

In homework 2 you'll continue exploring Unity and Blender, and also start preparing for the team project.

  1. During lab on Wednesday, April 6, form a "beta" team with two other students who are enrolled in the same lab as you. Make sure you leave knowing your beta teammates' names and email addresses. Make sure the TA knows the makeup of your team. Note that you will only work with your beta team for two weeks, and that your beta teammates can't be part of your "alpha" team for the last six weeks of the course.
  2. Using Blender, create a 3D model of a fairly simple asset that might be used in a computer game - for instance, an axe, a chair, a hat. You do not need to animate this model, but you should texture and shade it. The first few video tutorials in Lesson 05 provide a good introduction to materials and textures in Blender. You will use your 3D model in a small game you write in the next homework.
Take several screen shots of your Blender window showing your model from various angles, fully rendered. Paste them into a Word doc, and upload that Word doc (or a PDF of it) to the EEE Dropbox "ICS 62 - Hw 2".
This is an individual assignment, although you are encouraged to coordinate with your beta teammates.
  3. Work through the following Unity 3D tutorials, all of which can be reached from the Tutorials page on the Unity3D web site. The goal here is to familiarize you with both Unity and the range of tutorials available.
Take a screen shot at the end of each video (either of the video or, better, of your Unity work space), paste them into a Word doc, and upload that Word doc (or a PDF of it) to the EEE Dropbox "ICS 62 - Hw 2".
This is an individual assignment, although you are encouraged to discuss the material with your beta teammates.
  4. Write a two or three paragraph proposal for a 3D game that is meant to be persuasive or informative. Email your proposal to your beta teammates by Sunday noon on April 10, and cc ics62s16@gmail.com. Read the proposals your teammates send you and thoughtfully respond to them by email, before 11:55pm on Wednesday, April 13, again cc'ing ics62s16@gmail.com. The three principle areas to comment on are (1) is the topic clearly defined, and is the game's perspective on that topic clearly stated? (2) is the proposal scope reasonable (for a team of three people over six weeks), not too large or too small? (3) is the game a fun game that could be persuasive or informative?
You are welcome to use Google Docs or Word docs to write up your game proposal and to comment on your teammates' proposals. If you use a Google Doc, send an email with the link to ics62s16@gmail.com, and make sure that it's always clear who the author is of the proposal and each comment.
