Informatics 43: Introduction to Software Engineering

Spring, 2012
Homework A: Thinking and writing about software engineering
Due: Wednesday, April 11 at midnight (end of the day) (uploaded to EEE DropBox)

This assignment focuses on two paragraphs at the bottom of page 9 and one paragraph at the top of page 10 in the textbook (van Vliet). These three paragraphs begin with "Two characteristics that make software development projects extra difficult are" and end with "another team used metric units."

The assignment is to write a short essay (300 to 400 words) discussing how the two characteristics described in these paragraphs apply either to cooking a dinner with someone else, or to creating a short video with someone else. (If you haven't done either of these two activities, you'll have to use your imagination.) You should reach a conclusion, supported by reasoning and anecdotal evidence, about the degree to which the two characteristics apply to the activity you choose.

Turning in the essay

The project will be turned in by uploading a single Word (.doc or .docx) or text (.txt) file to the EEE DropBox "Inf 43 - Hw A". For full credit it should be uploaded on or before 11:59pm, Wednesday, April 11. If you need to turn in a late file after the EEE DropBox no longer permits uploads (which is not equivalent to "after April 11"), email it to Prof. Frost. Homework A will not be accepted for credit after Wednesday, April 18.

To evaluate your essay, we will consider the following.
